Research Interests: Ocean Observation (current velocity, acoustic travel time, etc.), Western Boundary Current System, Long-term Ocean Variability, Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction (Air-Sea Interaction), Climate Variability, Ocean's role in Climate

Hanna received her B.S. degree in oceanography from Seoul National University (SNU) where she pursued her graduate studies in physical oceanography. After receiving M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, she moved to the US as a postdoctoral fellow at Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island. Through this experience, she was able to widen her scope of research to a broader North Pacific studying western boundary current variability from its upstream in the East China Sea to its downstream over the Kuroshio Extension. Not long after she settled down in Rhode Island, she had an opportunity to apply for a faculty position in Japan, and decided to challenge herself again to move to Sapporo, Hokkaido. In turn, Hokkaido University served as a wonderful place for both research and education until she came back to Korea as a senior research scientist in Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology. Then, in 2018, she joined SNU as an assistant professor, where she was educated and trained as a physical oceanographer. A full CV can be found here.
